Paul Longthorpe


Paul joined Tarka Radio in the late 1980’s. Whilst visiting a patient in the hospital he noticed a sign in the foyer and decided to offer his services as an engineer. At the time he was working as a broadcast engineer with BBC News at TV Centre in London, although based in Barnstaple with his wife Anne. Paul has lived in North Devon since 1985 but is originally a southerner from Torquay. One of his two children is now working as a doctor at North Devon District Hospital!

Paul has been a committee member and station engineer on and off ever since and in the 1990’s was awarded honorary life membership in recognition of his efforts. Paul is currently a Trustee of Tarka Radio .

Paul has overseen many technical changes in his time including studio refurbishments and the move of the studios from level 2 to the foyer and then to the ground floor of the Ladywell unit. He also built the first Outside Broadcast Unit with a friend from BBC Radio Devon which was used for many years.

Paul still lives in Barnstaple where he has his own electrical business but also works for the BBC as a freelance engineer and project manager currently based at New Broadcasting House in London W1
